THE SHORELINE REPORT: Summer Hockey League Set for May 26th Puck Drop

PORT ELGIN — The countdown is officially on. The 2026 Shoreline Summer Hockey League regular season kicks off next week on Tuesday, May 26th, bringing another summer of fast-paced, competitive hockey to The Plex in Port Elgin.

Families can look forward to the return of the Shoreline Maple Leafs, Bruins, Blackhawks, and Red Wings, alongside a new addition to the ice this year: the Shoreline Canadiens.

Running from May 26th to August 23rd, the league offers young athletes (born 2013–2018) a high-tempo hockey experience that balances skill development with a manageable summer schedule.

📋 League Structure & Balanced Competition

To guarantee fair, competitive matchups all summer long, the league begins with two evaluation skates. Players will be placed by skill level into one of four distinct divisions: Rookie, Pro, All Star, and Elite.

  • The Schedule: 1–2 games per week on a rotating schedule (Sunday afternoons, Tuesday/Wednesday evenings), ensuring minimal conflict with other summer sports.

  • The Format: Fast-paced 4-on-4 play across three 14-minute periods.

  • The Guarantee: 10 regular season games plus up to 3 playoff games.

  • The Gear: Full league uniforms, including jerseys and matching socks, are provided to every player.

🔄 What’s New for the 2026 Season

The league has introduced several key updates this year designed to improve the pace of play and elevate the game-day experience:

  • ⏱️ Late-Game Stop-Time: To protect the integrity of tight games, the final two minutes will switch to stop-time during close matchups.

  • 🚨 Penalty Shots: Secondary penalties will now result in an immediate penalty shot, adding an exciting element of skill to the game.

  • ⚖️ Refined Team Balancing: Enhanced evaluation tools and more teams per division will ensure closer, more competitive divisions.
